About of
5ilience
5ilience is a new ensemble based in Montreal that brings together five emerging artists with a passion for chamber music.
Our quintet, composed of an oboe, a clarinet, a saxophone, a bass clarinet and a bassoon, respectively played by Léanne Teran-Paul, Mariane Pellerin, Thomas Gauthier-Lang, Gwénaëlle Ratouit and Maxime Hargous, is the first reed quintet in Quebec. It is through the combination of the timbral specificities of the instruments of our group that we have developed a palette of sounds as unique as they are versatile.
Following in the footsteps of the very first reed quintet, the Calefax ensemble, born in 1985, 5ilience is dedicated to expanding the existing reed quintet repertoire through the development of new works by emerging and established composers, and is committed to showcasing the vast possibilities of its formation by touching on many different musical styles.
Our events, aimed at communities in search of new discoveries, seek to create unforgettable experiences through our innovative programming, the quality of our collaborations and the freshness, detail and precision of our playing.

After the last two years, what I missed the most was a space where I could create music with fabulous musicians on a recurring basis. In initiating 5ilience, I not only wanted to bring music to the Montreal and Quebec cultural scene that we have never heard before; I also wanted to do it with artists - friends - who have the same passion as me. What captivates me about our ensemble is its versatility: in terms of style, we can look to the past as well as to the future, while remaining anchored in the present. 5ilience is my love letter to chamber music and the music of today.

As a clarinetist, I wanted to develop my chamber music practice with a singular and diversified project. 5ilience represents a perfect coalition with my desires: creating a unique ensemble with multiple personalities which constitute the ensemble thanks to the human and musical qualities of each one. Moreover, I have a strong taste for transmitting the repertoire of my instrument, especially when it is not well known like the reed quintet. I like the idea of experimenting and harmonizing the timbres of our instruments for an original and assertive rendering while exploring a wide repertoire ranging from baroque music to contemporary music through new music creations or transcriptions of orchestral works.

I am so happy to have said "yes" to Thomas, dressed in my pj’s in the corridor of the Domaine Forget residences this summer. As one of my first big projects in my professional life, I feel and know that 5ilience will take me far. It's the perfect opportunity for me to play with great musicians and to continue to learn and take on challenges. Plus, there's nothing like this gang and they’re fun to work with. I know I can count on them for their excellence and professionalism, but mostly for being great people with whom spending time makes me laugh and keeps me happy.

Since day one, I have been excited about the idea of being part of 5ilience because it is an extraordinary project imagined and led by a wonderful and passionate human being, our dear Thomas. I have always liked the idea of pushing the usual context of classical performances and this quintet allows me to discover new repertoire as well as other forms of artistic expression. The mix of music and lighting in our first production, for example, was very appealing to me. I also met inspiring musicians along the way and I strongly believe in the durability of this project and its relevance within the Quebec artistic milieu.

I have spent the last year following Thomas and 5ilience on a regular basis in order to dig into their desires, needs and aspirations. Thomas's great motivation, his will to bring something new to the current music scene and his prankster side appealed to me a lot. I feel that I am accompanying a solid project with a huge potential that is only at its beginning. It's very interesting and formative to discover an artistic environment different than mine, to find the similarities and differences while bringing my experience. Long live 5ilience!
